Mama said that there'll be days like this

there'll be days like this my Mama says. It's alright it hasn't really been a bad day, just as I was browsing my photos that image and the lines from the song came together in my mind, and I had to use them. J was absolutely fine when this was taken, by the way, he was just tired and I managed to capture a grimace rather than a smile.
I am feeling torn at the moment as to whether the posts this week have been worth posting. On one hand it share with you some cute pictures, and I have posted every day for the last few days. On the other hand I'm not sure I've actually said anything much in my posts. But as Rachel reminded me the other day, it's my blog and I can post whatever I want. It doesn't mean anyone has to read it!

And although I haven't written anything much I managed to please Steve by mentioning sheep, and I've had comments from the lovely Blair, and 'I', the girl I shared a house with last year. As well as several other lovely people like Kathleen, Angela, and Helibear. There we go, hopefully this post leaves you with enough links to have fun trawling through my archives, and possibly discovering a new blogger to add to your personal favourites :-)

Meanwhile, this weekend I plan to catch up on sleep, tidying and planning\filing stuff for work.

Who ever said you had to put money in for children to enjoy those rides you find outside supermarkets?

Thought I'd better write something in the post, otherwise it'd be another one of those 'the title is longer that the post' posts. This was a Bob the builder van, and Little One loved it. In fact I recall I had trouble persuading him to get out when I decided it was time to go home.

I feel the need, the need for speed

Either I need to take the photo quicker, or he needs to slow down. Something tells me getting Little One to slow down is not gonna happen...

Favourite things

When we went to the farm a couple of weeks ago Little One's favourite thing wasn't the goats, although I think they probably came a close second. Also exciting were the 'birds' (chickens and pigeons that just happened to be around) and the sheep 'baaaaaaa'. However, the thing that sent him into spasms of joy and excitement was watching the water sprinkers in an empty (of animals) fenced of area. He just could not stay away from them, and every few minutes we had to come back to admire and marvel at those sprinklers.

I'm so dizzy my head is spinning

I'm not actually dizzy, it's just that I took this photo while holding J and spinning round in a circle. It was a few weeks ago and he had been having a bit of a grumpy/upset moment (because his Mummy had just left for work, as I recall) and I was experimenting with ways to cheer him up. He absolutely loved spinning round, unfortunately my ability to spin without being really dizzy ran out before his love of it! Although he was more cheerful afterwards, so it served its purpose.

Were London Basil still alive, he might have gone to visit his cousin Exeter Basil

When I went to get HP from Exeter before Easter I had the pleasure of meeting Basil's cousin Basil. Unfortunately Exeter Basil had not been able to afford the train fare in order to make it to London Basil's funeral, but he passed on his regards to his family when he met them (that's me btw).

News just in: It appears that Exeter Basil has disappeared. At this moment it remains unclear whether he too has passed away, or merely passed on to pastures new. We will of course pass on any news of him as soon as we hear it. In the meantime, we shall return to our normal broadcasting schedule.

Learning your ABCs

A couple of months ago Little One's Mum got some flashcards to begin to use with him. He's not yet two so they weren't meant to be a big deal, just another way of presenting words and pictures to him in a fun way. He'd also recently discovered books in a big way and loves to sit up on the sofa next to you listening to stories and opening the flaps.

He's at the stage where everything he sees is exciting and needs to be commented on. If you take him out he spots 'dars' 'fans' 'scooops' (cars, vans, Scoop - meaning a lorry or something similar, as seen in Bob the Builder!) He says "sky" and looks up whenever he hears the sound of a plane or helicopter - which makes you realise just how many planes do go over his house!

And he just loves his flashcards. He knows loads of them now, as soon as you hold up the key or the man or the volcano or... he gets all excited and shouts out the word. One of his favourite games is to drop them in a pile on the floor\sofa\window sill and pick out his favouites, "cano (volcano), whoosh (with hand actions too!)" or "geeys (keys)" or best of all "ducK" with a big emphasis on the 'ck' sound at the end.

Here's to new batteries

This photo was taken a few months ago, when the batteries in the 'cookie jar' were still alive. Oh, how that song sticks in your brain. I think I can recite most of the words and songs that Little One's toys produce. And yet I did miss the cookie jar song once the batteries ran out. I would find myself humming it or singing it to myself, sometimes at totally inappropriate moments.

This week when I went to Little One's house on Tuesday I discovered to my delight that the cookie jar has new batteries. Once again I can sing along to the tune, not just on my own. Life makes sense again (or something).

I'm going to post this post now, since I seem to have got so bad at posting lately, and if I actually write a post it seems sensible to put it up on the blog. However, it is gone 11pm and what I have written may not actually be as amusing or make as much sense in the morning as it does to me now. And for that I apologise. Perhaps I'll make changes in the morning when I feel more awake. Now, to bed.

Hair

I don't know why, but I just like this picture. I took it in the mirror a couple of weeks ago when I was experimenting whether my hair was long enough to go neatly into plaits. It wasn't quite, as you can see by the wispy bits hanging down, but worth a try. Since then I have plaited my hair a couple of times, and then last Friday I had it cut short again, so it definitely won't go into plaits now.

Fun in the Sun

HP is back off to university today. Bekki is coming down from Cambridge on the train and then the two of them will drive down to Exeter together. I have brought J home with me to help HP get the last few bits of packing done. I'm off to the station to pick up Bekki now, and hopefully J will go to sleep in the car, because he's got a bit grumpy.
Oh, this is my friend Sarah who came to the farm with J and B and me the week before last. We had a lovely day in the sunshine enjoying the farm and park. Today is very sunny too. Gotta go...

Scrabble

We've just finished a game of scrabble. I was playing against my Mum and Dad, and both my Mum and I started the game with seven letter words. And we managed to get the words fairly spread out. My Mum won, but I managed to go out first :-)

Feet

There's something about small children's feet that I love. These are some of my favourite pictures relating to feet I've captured recently. This post is dedicated to J who is at the 'just beginning to like this walking thing' stage. The question is, can you guess to whom each feet belong? (There's something wrong about that last sentence, but I can't work out how to make it sound right!)

It's my life - the update

Ok, so some things have changed in my life, and I've never quite got round to blogging about them. No, before you ask, I haven't got married or pregnant!
Last October when I started looking after the little one it was on a Tuesday and a Wednesday, but once his Mum went on maternity leave I changed to only having him on a Tuesday, and started looking after the two sons of another family from church on a Wednesday. That means I've got about 2 months worth of photos and stories that I haven't ever got round to blogging about, because I never seemed to have time to write an introduction to explain who they are.

Little one's nickname was easy to make up once I decided I didn't want to refer to him by his name, but it wasn't so easy to come up with identities for these two boys. Maybe I've just run out of good ideas for nicknames. Anyway, rather than wait any longer to introduce them to you, I'll just use an initial letter for each, and if I come up with nicknames in the future I'll make sure I make it clear which is which.
B is five years old, and during school terms I look after him before and after school. J is 1 and I have him all day. This holiday I agreed to look after both boys all day for two days each week. I had them last Wednesday and Thursday, and I've got them tomorrow and Thursday this week as well. I think HP might come somewhere on an outing with us this week. I've thought about going up to central London to a musuem, but I think I might be feeling a bit tired to want to take them on the tube, even with HP to help me. We shall see...

Anyway, here are J and B. I love this picture I took of J, it just captures him brilliantly. The one of B was from last Wednesday when we made Easter nests in the afternoon while J napped.

So many posts, so little brainpower

I have several posts that I want to write, but somehow making the jump from brain to computer screen seems to be a task that doesn't happen unless I'm in the room making the connection between the two. And life has been so busy (and then today it's been sneezy) that those posts just haven't made it yet.
So instead tonight I will leave you with a goose, one of many that mobbed us when we went to feed the ducks at Forty Hall last week. Ok, so 'mobbed' may be too strong a word, but they did get pretty close, and were a bit scary.

Fun on the Farm

'A farm in London?' I hear you cry. 'Yes, indeed' I reply.
And then I stop with the funny talking thing, otherwise it will get my poor tired brain confused.

But anyway, there is a farm in Leyton, which is pretty much just up the road from where I live. (Well, a long road, especially if it's the middle of the day and there's lots of traffic, but still, by no means a long way away).

Last week I took the little one to Brooks Farm and he absolutely loved it. It's only a little farm, but offers enough animals to charm a 20 month old for ages, not to mention the playground which we spent an hour and a half in. If you live anywhere near me I would thoroughly recommend a visit, and if not, then you will just have to enjoy pictures of the little one :-)

Not yet a big brother

Little one's Mum was due to be induced yesterday. For a number of reasons that didn't happen, and they sent her home again last night. She went back to hospital this morning, and they have done some stuff, but with little results as yet. I think she and little one's Dad are getting tired and feeling apprehensive about what's to come, so it would be great if you could pray for them that things can get going properly soon.

Update: I just got a text from little one's Dad saying 'things have slowed down, please pray that the baby comes tonight'. So there you have it, straight from the horses mouth. (or 'uh-sees' mouth if you're the little one)

Fun Fun Fun

A couple of weeks I took the little one to Kids Corner again. He absolutely loves it there and so do I, so when his Mum suggested it I jumped at the idea. I'd been talking about it to HP the day before and she thought it sounded great fun, so I invited her to come along with us. We had a fantastic time, and I managed to capture some highlights with my camera phone (and obviously I got HP to take the one of me and the little one!). Don't you just love the look on HP's face?! In case you can't tell from the pictures, the top of the slide starts off pretty much vertical, so you just have to sort of launch yourself off the edge and hope for the best!

In other news, little one's Mum who is now at full term with her pregnancy is going to be induced tomorrow (unless the baby makes an appearance before then). Little one will soon be a big brother. I'm sure the whole family would appreciate your thoughts and prayers :-)

When I'm cleaning windows

I was going to write this post about something else entirely, but then I walked into the kitchen to get a drink of water. The sun was shining directly onto the windows and door and I realised just how much they need to be cleaned. Maybe that's why people do their cleaning in the sping - it's when the sun starts to come out again for long enough for people to realise just how much things need cleaning. Throughout the winter the sun wasn't around long enough to notice properly. But I disgress... (although I'm not sure if I do it with one s or two).

Anyway, I looked in the cupborad under the sink to see what we had, and sure enough I came up with some window and mirror cleaner. I was slightly put off by the fact that the spray trigger appeared to be absent, but only for a few minutes. I read the instruction and decided I could just apply it withn one cloth and then wipe it off with another. However, the problem with cleaning windows, as I discovered, is if you clean one side it just makes you realise how much the other side needs cleaning too. I hadn't had this problem with the bathroom mirror upstairs, and that had turned out looking ok, but lets just say although bits of the windows in the kitchen look better, some bits seem to look worse. I decided to call it a day as I was really quite thirsty. Thus recalled to my original quest I got my glass of water and retreated to the front room to write a blog post. Which is how I ended up writing this post, and why I'm now going to ask if anyone has any failsafe, or at least useable methods for cleaning windows. Because I think cleaning windows is just going to have to go on my list of things to do this holiday. Along with a million other things. Just as well I've got two weeks!

Promise of posts to come

Oh my dear faithful reader(s?), I have left you all alone with nothing to read for too long now. I cannot promise that this post will fulfill your reading desires, however it is a promise of posts to come. As of tomorrow at 2.30pm the school I work in breaks up for two weeks for the Easter holidays. By no means does this mean I'm having two weeks off (because I'll be looking after little people Tuesday through to Thursday both weeks) however, it does offer some potential opportunities for me to come up with something intellegent to say to you (all?).

I also have some great photos that I want to share with you. Well, more amusing rather than great - my camera decided it doesn't want to charge so I've had to take pictures with my phone camera, so the pictures may look a little grainy, but still it's the though that counts (possibly).

Anyway, I'd better stop talking before I scare you all away forever. Can you tell just how tired I am?

My Mother, the washing up queen

My Mummy is the sort of washer-upper who if noone comes along to dry up for her, she just carries on anyway. This is just a post to wish her a very Happy Mother's Day and tell her that we love her :-)

Hasn't he grown?

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Life has been very busy, and I've been getting these nasty migraines - I had one on Saturday and ended up not getting to see HP in her show, and I had another one today and had to come home from work.

We're off to see the HP, the wonderful HP of Ex(eter)

Ok, so we're off tomorrow, and those words didn't exactly fit right, but I made an effort! And we'll get to see her and most of her housemates perform in Princess Ida. I'm really excited. Especially since Bekki will be there for the weekend too, and my Grandparents and Uncle (featured in this previous post, among others!) are coming to the performance. And HP's boyfriend Steve is going to come too (so he has someone to sit with!)

(In case it wasn't totally clear, the title of this post was to be sung to the tune of 'We're off to see the wizard' from the Wizard of Oz.)

Slippers

Today I had a moment when I felt like a really bad child minder. The little one and I were heading out for a walk in the beautiful sunshine, and he lives in a first floor flat so there are lots of steps to go down. We were doing fine on the first set of steps which are inside the flat, but about halfway down on the second set he suddenly slipped and there was no way I was able to grab him. He sort of rolled down the last few steps and landed at the bottom crying. It was like it happened it slow motion. I jumped down and picked him up and took him inside.

He was really upset, and so was I. It didn't make me cry, but I half thought it might. I think my the calm rational side of my brain took over. I got his coat shoes and muddy trousers off (he landed in a wet patch at the bottom) and then found the first aid kit. He was very brave about it all, despite having grazes on one side of his face and on his hand. I calmed him (and me) down and we went to look at a book for a while. I got damp towel and held it on his face and forehead because there were bumps coming up, but the problem with a 20 month old is that they really don't want to stay still for too long. He would stay with me for a long as a verse of 'twinkle twinkle little star', and then he'd be off again (the singing seemed to calm him down and stop him wriggling, and it was the first song that came to mind!)

A little while later we did go out again, and this time I made sure I was right in front of him and there was no way he was going to slip. By the time his parents got home he was acting just as usual, and only had the lovely bump and grazes to show for it. They were really lovely about it all, and told me not to worry about it. That made me feel a lot better :-)
I came home around 3pm and I'm going back this evening to look after the little one so that his parents can go out to their church small group.

This afternoon I've been tidying up my room and finally found my slipper which seemed to have disappeared off the face of the planet. It had somehow got under the end of my bed, which is a place that wouldn't really have seemed possible for it to get to, only I'd checked all the logical places and still not found it! The title of this post refers to finding my slipper, but I've just realised it could just as well refer to the little one slipping down the steps.

Monday Monday, except it's not, oh actually it is

Hmmm, yes, the post title gives you a small insight into my befuddled brain.

We (my church) had a joint service with two other local churches and ran a huge sunday school for all the children aged from 4-11. I was one of the people up front leading it. For anyone that doesn't already know, our church meets in a cinema, so we have sunday school is various different screens week by week (or, if it's like the week before, sometimes different screens throughout the morning!) We usually have around 20 children in the 4-7 age group, and use the space at the front of the screen. In fact, it's quite easy to forget that you're actually in a cinema, and if when you do go to the cinema to see a film it's a bit of a novelty (at least it is for me, because I've only been once in the last as long as I can remember little while, if that makes sense!).

Anyway, it's usually us (3 leaders), the kids, some chairs, juice & cups and maybe a CD player or flip chart or something. But this week we had more like 80 children (the wider age range, and the extra children from the other churches), a lot more adults, and lots of scary technology. We had a microphone, we were meant to have two, but one of them wouldn't work, we had a laptop and projecter for the words of the songs, and we had a keyboard for the worship time. We also had the sound desk to go with the mike, the keyboard and the computer. And I, for some bizare reason got chosen to be in charge of the sound desk and computer. I was the one responsible for scrolling through the words of the songs, keeping an eye on the sound levels, and changing from the songs to a clip from a DVD. And it all went ok, until almost at the end of the last song when the computer decided to 'hibernate' and there was no way it was going to let me turn it back on. But it was ok, because most people already knew or had got the hang of the words by that point, and it was the (planned to be!) last song. So I didn't panic too much!

We had a fantastic time, and I even managed the bit where I had to stand up and talk into the microphone to everybody for about 5 minutes (and I couldn't find my copy of the notes I was trying to speak on, and had to borrow someone else's at the last minute!)

And yes, now we come to the whole point of the story - it went really well, but left me really shattered. I didn't do much yesterday afternoon and managed to make it through today, but now (slightly later than I'd planned due to the long length of this post) I am off to bed. And hopefully I will feel more awake tomorrow for looking after the little one.
Goodnight all :-)

ps This was just another classic Little One moment captured for posterity.

P A R T Y

I love those parties when you don't have to stand on ceremony, but are just friends getting together to have fun. If this is your first time here I'm not trying to suggest I don't want you here, what I'm trying to say, although it's not really coming across right, is that I'd love us to be friends and have fun. So stick around, join me for some silly games and fun, and leave me a comment to tell me what you like a party to be like, and I'll see what we can do.

In all the party fever I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Debs, I'm 24 and I live in London, UK. I've been blogging for about a year and a half now, and love reading other people's blogs too (so if you leave me a comment I'll definitely be popping over to say over the next week or two!) I also blog over at One Weigh or Another, so if you want to know more about my and other lovely ladies current weight loss journey you can find us over there.

I work in a primary school as a special needs assistant giving one-to-one support, childmind two days a week, and also do some home tutoring, which all in all means I work with eight different children over the course of a week. That's not including being one the 4-7s children's workers at my church, and all the other babysitting I do. At the moment I'm single and so don't have any children of my own, but love 'borrowing' other people's, and they seem to enjoy it too, which is good! Recently I've been reading more and more blogs written by home schoolers, and I reckon if one day I do have my own children I'll have a hard decision (made with my husband, of course!) whether to send my kids to school or home educate them. However, a few other details need to fall into place before I have to make that decision!

Hmmm, I seem to have turned into one of those people who you get stuck listening to while they rabbit on for ages. I do apologise, I wanted this party to be fun. One thing that can be amusing is when someone has some sort of party trick, at least it can be a good conversation starter. So, what's your party trick?
If you don't have a party trick, what's the best or worst party you've ever been to, and why?

The Ultimate blog party

Ultimate Blog Party
I've noticed this loads of places, including, of course, 5 Minutes For Mom.

It officially starts on the 2nd of March, and just seems to me to be a great way to 'meet' new people and read some new blogs. And... there are gonna be some fab prizes too. I'm not sure I'm doing this justice, so follow the links and check it out for yourself!

I have nothing to say, but I'm blogging anyway

So here's a pretty picture. It's HP playing 'Somewhere over the rainbow' if my memory serves me correctly.
(Taken on my mobile, which is why it's a bit grainy. However if you look closely it does appear to say 'Somew..' on the sheet of music, which would seem to back up my theory.)

catching up

I decided at the beginning of the year to start a journal, this would just be somewhere I could record briefly what I did each day, the title of any blog posts I wrote, and things like how much exercise I took and water I drank. I knew I was unlikely to manage to do it every day, but could catch up every few days. I looked in it today and discovered I'd got stuck on January 23rd and decided today was the day to try to catch up - even if that means only writing a couple of sentences for some days. My Mum and I decided it would be fun to keep track of what we ate (for our main meal) on a food themed calender we got free from somewhere and is up in the kitchen, so even if it's only writing what we ate that day, I can write something!

I've also been sorting out my Sunday school stuff for tomorrow, and a few other bits and bobs as well. Tonight I am babysitting the little one, so I plan to sit and write my journal and cut out a few things for sunday school. A good day of catching up. I wonder just how far I'll get!

Here's little one watching the ducKS.

bluetooth breakthrough

Ok, I have no idea why I couldn't get my phone and computer to communicate properly the other night, but yesterday our internet stopped working*, so I couldn't catch up on blogs and instead thought I'd try the bluetooth thing one last time before I called in the heavies (or asked some of the computer-y people at church). And it worked, so I sat and sent all the photos on the phone to the computer (all 70ish). It didn't actually take that long, you can sort of get into the pattern of what button to press when, and it goes really quick. It's good because I now have all the pictures saved, and can delete some off my phone if I want to, I think it can only hold 100 altogether. And most importantly I can now put them on my blog :-)

This is one of my favourites. It was taken on one of the very first times I looked after the little one, when he had a major desire to grab anything that was most unsuitable for him to have (phones, cameras, TV remotes...) and this captured his hand reaching out trying to grab my phone. I have it as my screensaver on my phone.

[Oh, I also have my computer screensaver set to be photos - it just picks photos at random from all those saved in the 'my pictures' folder. It's a great way to see and remember old photos - sometimes I just sit and watch the screensaver!]
[*Our internet was down because the guys digging up the road had cut through not one, but two cables. An engineer came out and fixed it this afternoon, so I'm happy again :-)]

Bluetooth

My Dad was kind enough to buy some software for us to be able to have bluetooth on our computer, so that I could get the photos off my phone. We've set it all up, and my phone and camera can 'see' each other just fine, however, when I try to send a photo from the camera to the computer, the phone says it cannot locate a device and therefore cannot send. Does anyone have a clue about what I might be doing wrong?!!

(Oh, and here's an apple photo from the other day. Or should that be a-boots?!?!)

Adding to the blog roll

As ever, the list of blogs I read is far greater than the list of blogs on my blog roll, and it seemed right that I ought to link to some more of my favourite reads, and hence share them with you, my faithful readers.

Before I do, however, let me point you towards One Weigh or Another. I check the blogs of the OWOA ladies on that blogroll every day, and you'll find some great reading if you check those out. In particular let me mention Lady Laura, whose blog I love to read, so much so that I am adding her to my blogroll as well (other OWOA ladies, please don't be offended if you're not on my sidebar, it just means that I click through to you from OWOA instead!)

I've been reading Arwen's blog ever since I discovered her on Bekki's blogroll a while back. A couple of other blogs I've grown to love, courtesy of Bekki, are Light and Momentary and Jules (who I actually know in real life as she goes to my church).

A blog I discovered with the help of Works for me Wednesdays over at Rocks in my Dryer is Life in a Shoe, which is the blog of a mother who has eight children. I have an awful amount of respect for her and love to read about their family exploits!

That's all the links I can think of off the top of my head, but you can be sure there are still more to come some day soon! Do click over and see what you think, you may even find them more exciting than me ;-)

Could he be any cuter?

Snow Story Saturday

[UPDATED - I added the pictures]
Ok, so I've finally got round to telling you about my day the day it snowed (which is now over a week ago). Unfortunately the other computer doesn't want to play, so I can't load up ay of my pictures which are saved there.

We don't get snow much in London, and when we do it never really seems to come to much. Just before the warmroof guys started on our roof it did snow, but not a huge amount, and it went pretty quickly. Last week (thankfully after the roof was finished) we were forecast not just snow, but heavy snow. On the Wednesday I went to my church small group, and didn't get home until quite late and the only parking space was at the end of the road, on the 'waiting limited' spaces (where between 8am and 6.30 pm people can stop for half an hour, but not longer). Since it was 11pm at night that wasn't an issue for me, and I'd be going out before 8.30 the next morning, so all was well and good.

Until, it snowed and snowed in the night (see my back garden here). And my car was all alone at the end of the road, with a lovely big snowdrift all around it. I did attempt to move some of the snow out of the way and try to move my car, but it was just too slippery, and I had to get my mum to reverse it back into the bay for me cos it was actually a bit scary. I left a note inside to any traffic wardens that might venture out, in the hope they would have pity on me and not give me a ticket for being there longer that I ought to be. At the end of the day though, I'd rather get a parking ticket than try to move the car and put myself in danger.

So I was off to catch the bus. Walking up our road I was able to walk on fresh snow as not many people had been walked up there already, but when I got to the main road at the top it was a different story - it was so slipperly and slushy and generally yuck. Many of you will know I am the most accident prone person in the world, and at that point I figured it wouldbe madness for me to try to walk all the way to work as I'd be sure to do damage to myself. However after waiting for three quarters of an hour for the bus to come I wasn't so sure! By that point though you don't want to move in case the bus comes along at that moment, and as I said already, the pavements were just horrible to walk on.The bus finally came, and then crawled along the road, taking about half an hour to travel what would probably take 5-10 minutes. Then, when we got to Homebase (for those of you who know my local area you'll appreciate just how far we hadn't gone) the driver said he wasn't able to go down the hill where I needed to go, and would just continue up the road rejoining his proper route later on. So I got off the bus into the snow that was rapidly beginning to fall again. I rang into school at this point to see if it was really worth me going in, or whether I should just turn back anf go home. And got back the cheery reply from the headmistress "yes, come on it, buisness as usual". So on I trudged, down a steep and very slippery road and on towards school, telling people I passed who were waiting at bus stops that the bus would not be coming along this road as it had made the decision to divert its route.

I was almost at school, and actually on the wrong side of the road talking to a group of people at a bus stop that it was unlikely a bus would be coming for them either, when a bus going in my direction came along. I was really annoyed, having been chucked off a bus and told they wouldn't be going my way, I was now on the wrong side of the road and nowhere near a useful bus stop. I thought 'what the heck' and stuck out my arm anyway. Luckily the bus driver stopped. She confirmed to the people at the stop that buses wouldn't be coming along for them, and graciously let me on. I told her what had happened and she even let me on without paying. What a lovely lady :-)

I then travelled the last couple of stops to work and then having got off the bus, managed to put my foot in a pool of slush whilst walking the last little bit of the journey, and totally soaked one of my shoes. I finally arrived at around 10.45, having spent over 2 hours on a journey that ought to take around 10 minutes by car. My coat and gloves were soaking, as were my trousers up to the knees and my shoes. Having sorted myself out as best I could I went into class for the last 10 minutes of the lesson. Then it was breaktime, and during the next lesson I was meant to be having planning time anyway (so not with the kids, but getting things sorted out!). Neither of the two children I work one-to-one with had made it into school, so in a way I actually had about 10 minutes in class being useful, having spent all that time to get there.

However, the headteacher did ask me if I would be willing to work in the nursery for the afternoon, and I agreed. My Mum works at the same school and she had a slightly less eventful journey (she only works afternoons) and had brought me some dry things to wear, so I was feeling a lot better. I actually had a lovely time in the nursery, only a handful of children made it in, and a couple of Mums stayed too, so we had 9 children cared for by 4 adults!

By the time we (My Mum and I) were ready to go home again, they had got the buses running again, and we caught one after a fairly short wait, and it was much more like the normal amount of time that it ought to take. Needless to say, I was absolutely shattered (and I was coming down with a coldy thing) so I never really got a chance to go out and play in the snow, and by the next day it was all slushy and horrid.
Oh well, it had looked pretty in the morning when I first woke up, and before I started trying to get to work!

A is for...

I'm looking after the little one today. He's been ill for the last week, but seems to be a lot better today, however his sleep pattern is all messed up, so this may have to be a short post if he wakes up soon...

Although it's only a week since I saw him last it's amazing just how much can change at this stage in a child's life (he's around 19 months old). He's started copying the way his Daddy puts his hands in his pockets, and also has several new phrases. The one I've heard most today is 'bad Boots' (Boots is the name of the cat BTW).

The little one has always had a thing about emptying out bags, and today was no exception. In the past he's managed to do thing like empty out a whole pack of wet wipes, seemingly in the time it takes to blink. Or pull out tissues, and hold each one to his nose for a second before discarding it on the floor and pull out the next one. Today he found an apple in my bag, pulled it out shouting 'ball', and threw it across the room, whereupon it rolled under the TV unit.
It was hilarious watching him try to turn himself upside down in an attempt to see where his new toy had gone. Eventually he was getting cross with not being able to reach it so I had to stop laughing and pull it out for him.

'Apple [little one], can you say apple? It's not a ball, it's an apple'.

I went to the kitchen to cut it up and came back with a bowl of apple. He loved eating it (picture to be added later when I'm back at home) and every time he took a piece I said 'apple'. He eventually got the idea, and when I said 'What's this?' he replied
'A-Boots'.

Well, you can't win every time, eh?

(oh, snow story. Hmm, yes, maybe later?! Or at least some more snow pictures!)

Not my snow story yet

I do wanna tell you all how it took me forever to get to work on Thursday and all that happened that day, but at the moment I'm not feeling too well, and have no brain power. I've just got a nasty cough and wheeze coupled with feeling all cold and light-headed, and generally just feeling a bit yuck. So I've had a gentle day today, and hopefully I'll be up to typing proper content tomorrow.

Alphabet meme

I as tagged by Bethany, and as she's one of the lovely OWOA ladies how could I refuse?!!

A- Available or married? Available
B- Best Friend? Sarah and Joy Banana
C- Cake or Pie? Homemade (southbeach friendly?!?!) chocolate cake. (Hmm, might have to work on that one!)
D- Drink of Choice? I drink loads of water at the moment. Think I'm a bit addicted to it really. Oh, I also like apple squash. Not juice, but squash. Since I started doing South beach I've really stopped drinking most other things cos they just seem too sweet.
E- Essential Item? My mobile phone when I'm at work - I don't wear a watch so it helps me keep a track of time, and I can use the stopwatch to do stuff like 'how many words you can write in a minute' (the child I'm working with, not me!), and I can always text people if I get bored.
F- Favorite Colour? Purple. As anyone that saw me could probably guess. There was a day I pulled up at a petrol station in my purple car, wearing purple trousers I decided I'd better not put on my purple fleece even though it was cold - it does look a bit OTT on the purple front, and I didn't want anyone to think I was a purple freak!
G- Gummi Bears or Worms? Um, either are fun. I like eating jelly babies, especially biting their heads off.
H- Hometown? Walthamstow, London. Location of the longest street market in Europe (or so I heard once, so could be that that bit of information is totally out of date by now) and also at the end of the Victoria line of the London Underground.
I- Indulgence? Two blog posts in one day?!? Chocolate, reading a book instead of getting on with whatever else I should be doing.
J-January or February? January - it is the month to have a birthday in for my family. My little sister, dad, uncle, aunts, several cousins and probably some other people all have their birthday in this month. Hmm, maybe I should have picked February, it might have been a less expensice month to pick (just think of all those gifts and cards).
K- Kids & names? Haven't got any, apart from the ones I work with. They include 'the little one' who gets featured on my blog so much that people probably think he's mine.
L- Life is incomplete without? books, friends, family, God
M-Marriage Date? Don't know yet if I'll ever have one. Hopefully, maybe, one day...
N- Number of Siblings? Two, Bekki and Hannah (aka HP)
O- Oranges or apples? Apples - you don't have to peal them to eat them. It's not fun pealing oranges when the eczema on your hands is sore.
P- Phobias/Fears? I've recently discovered I don't like heights that much, or least when you're sitting at the top of the ladder going into the loft and you look down and your tummy and head feel a bit weird. Does that count?
Q-Favorite Quote? Hmm, favourite quote. Lots of family ones that no-one else will understand, for example "It's like a whole 'nother country" "I think you'll find that's lions", and many other delightful things my Mummy has said.
R- Reason to Smile? Lots. Especially looking after the little one. He can make me smile just seeing him. Having Jesus as my personal Lord and Saviour. Reading blogs.
S- Season? Spring, it's not too hot, and that's when my birthday is.
T- Tag three people! Kathleen, Bekki and Rachel
U- Unknown fact about me: I have a scar on my chin from when I was little and climbed up a hospital trolley (while I was in hospital because of my asthma) and fell off. Well at least I was in the right place, right?!
V- Vell, vot is vun to do if vere is no v?
W- Worst habit? Spending too much time on the computer.
X- x-cellent, I'm getting tired and there's nothing to put for x, so I don't have to use any extra brainpower.
Y- Your favorite food? I'm not sure I want to say, because last time I was asked this question I was really into salad and lettuce for lunch, and I said that, and then I went off it. So now I might go off whatever I say this time. And also, the other reason is that I can't actually think of what my favourite food is!
Z- Zodiac? Really not into that stuff.

(An almost) self portrait

This is me as drawn by little Debbie at church. She loves to come over to me at church and finds it incredibly amusing to be able to say "hi Debbie" to someone else, or when people see us together and say "hello Debbie and Debbie".

This fantastic picture (among others) was done at a church prayer meeting at the start of the year. Debbie came over to say hello while we were still praying, so i gave her my notebook to draw in. She said that this was me. She asked me to write Debbie at the top, which I did, and then had her own attempt at writing it (she's only about 3 years old). She then requested I draw something, so I did the snail quickly and she had a go at copying it.
I was clearing out all the bits of paper in my bible case today and came across her pictures. After coming out of the scanner this one is going up on my pinboard because it makes me smile.

new loft hatch

I was going to write this post tomorrow, but Steve (as featured here and here with HP) requested it to be written now (and I didn't need much persuading).

It just took me far too long to put all these photos in the right order, so I'll keep the explanations to a minimum or else I'll never get to bed tonight.

I got home from work just as the two guys who'd been working on our loft today left. We said goodbye to them, and then my Dad went upstairs to try out the new loft hatch again for himself. I just happened to be able to grab my camera and capture his every move. Some of the photos were perhaps not the best, but I have to say if you were to cut out and stick them together I believe they'd make a pretty cool flip book like those ones you used to have when you were younger. (Or as illustrated by flicking through the slide show on my computer very quickly. It's like, 'wow, you can see him moving...')

Without further ado, our new loft hatch and ladder and my Daddy. (The warmroof guys are coming back to do a few finishing off bits tomorrow, so maybe a few final photos of it them, but I guess soon you will have had enough of looking at my ceiling! Um, and maybe some pictures of inside the loft to show off the window that's been put in and the new flooring. Oh, and warmroof is the name of the company that are doing the work for us.)

Oh go on then, here's my Dad standing on the new flooring, next to the new window.

More loft progress

This is what our landing ceiling looked like this morning. Last night that plastic was still stuck up over the hole, but by this morning it has fallen down. What looks like snow on the inside of the roof is actually the new insulation that has been sprayed on. If you look very carefully you can see the edge of the old hatch just inside the bathroom (but it might be one of those things that you have to know what you're looking at to be able to see it!
